The Gambia has nominated Abubacarr M. Tambadou as its candidate for a seat at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), marking the first time in the nation’s history that it has put forward a nominee for the esteemed position.

Tambadou’s candidacy is set to be considered in the ICJ’s 2026 elections.

With over 20 years of experience in international law, Tambadou has held several influential positions, including serving as the Gambia’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice from 2017 to 2020.

Currently, he serves as Registrar of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), at the level of Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations. Tambadou also prosecuted high-profile figures at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, making significant contributions to global justice.

The Gambia government has expressed full support for Tambadou’s nomination, calling it a historic moment for the nation.

“While The Gambia has always played an active role in international law and human rights, we have never before put forward a candidate for the ICJ. This nomination is a momentous occasion for our nation,” said the Gambia government spokesperson in a statement.

“The next ICJ elections in 2026 provide The Gambia with a unique opportunity to present a candidate for the very first time in our history. The government of The Gambia is proud to fully support the candidacy of Mr. Abubacarr M. Tambadou as a Judge of the International Court of Justice,” added the statement.

The Gambia government said Tambadou’s commitment to justice is also reflected in his leadership of the Gambia’s legal efforts against Myanmar over allegations of genocide against the Rohingya Muslims.

“This case, being heard by the ICJ, has drawn global attention and showcased The Gambia’s advocacy for human rights,” stated the government.

“The Gambia believes that Tambadou’s election would elevate its standing on the world stage and reflect its dedication to international justice. If elected, Mr. Tambadou’s appointment to the International Court of Justice will be a monumental achievement for The Gambia and will further our commitment to upholding the principles of justice, accountability, and human rights worldwide,” the government’s statement added.

The government said Tambadou’s candidacy is expected to receive significant international attention, further strengthening The Gambia’s influence on the global legal stage as the 2026 election approaches.
