Poem Night: A Cry Against FGM

By  Kawsu O Ceesay

Night: A Cry Against FGM

The night she longed for arrived—

a night meant for love, for union.

Yet, in the name of tradition,

this promised embrace became a nightmare.

Her body, once ready for intimacy,

was bound by ritual, sealed in pain.

A night meant for joy turned to sorrow,

as the weight of custom nearly stole her life.

Rushed to the nansimba for release,

she sought to unseal what was taken,

A reminder that no ritual

should condemn a life to suffering.

Let us rise and protect our girls,

stand against practices that violate human rights,

and transform every night into one of healing, hope, and freedom.
