Ousman Jarju, a native of Tanji village in the West Coast Region, was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to charges of housebreaking. Magistrate Kanjura B. Sambou delivered the verdict, which included several fines and prison terms in default.
Jarju was charged with two counts of housebreaking and theft, and was sentenced to a fine of ten thousand dalasi (D10,000) on the first count, with six months imprisonment in default. And on count two to pay fifteen thousand dalasi (D15,000) with nine months imprisonment in default. Additionally, he was ordered to pay compensation of one hundred thirty thousand, eight hundred and eighty dalasi (D130,880) to the victim, Lamin Jammeh. Failure to pay the compensation would result in an additional one-year imprisonment.
The charges stem from an incident in February 2025, when Ousman Jarju unlawfully broke into the home of Lamin Jammeh in Tanji, with the intent to commit a felony. During the break-in, he stole aluminum window frames valued at D130,880.
