By: Haruna Kuyateh

Kerewan Area Council is set to procure two waste collection trucks for Barra and Farafenni for the collection of the waste generated within the areas. This will ease the disposal of daily waste generated in urban settlements.

The area council will also provide five motorcycles for revenue collectors to improve the council’s daily revenue collection.

Speaking to The Voice in her office, CEO Sainabou Martin Sonko hailed the cordial working relationship among the Chairman, staff, and general counsel for their support in advancing the development trajectory of the local council.

She noted that the council is working with Gambia Port Authority and Supersonic Financial Services to respond to the collection of the waste generated within the two major settlements. The trucks would be the first-ever waste collection mobility that the council has ever supplied to the area.

Kerewan Area Council started the street light project in Kerewan of which over D300,000 was spent and plans are on the way to replicate a similar initiative in Farafenni and Ngain Sanjal and the overall ambition is to target all growth centers across the region.

Commenting on motorcycles for revenue collectors, she said mobility is essential to facilitate the movement of collectors to reach out to communities and institutions to collect rates and taxes on time and ensure timely banking of all council revenue to banks.

She went on to say recently the council facilitated the payment of tuition fees for two people pursuing education at Gambia College and the University of The Gambia.

However, she called upon the communities to comply with, timely,

payment of rates and taxes, as it will enable the council to plow back 60% in the form of a development project.

Meanwhile, the council supported the Regional Youth Committee with D650,000 to enhance their participation at the last NAYCONF and expressed that the performance of youths was quite impressive.
