Diaspora Expresses Deep Discontent with National Assembly’s Decision

Gambians in the diaspora have voiced strong disappointment following the National Assembly’s refusal to approve diaspora voting. Many have labeled the decision unconstitutional and unjust, reflecting growing frustration among Gambians abroad.

Saffiyong Camara, Chairman of PDOIS in Italy, emphasized that PDOIS remains committed to transforming The Gambia and urged citizens to hold their lawmakers accountable. “This is blatant discrimination. It’s disheartening that those we elected to represent us are working against our rights. Lawmakers should create laws that serve the people, not prioritize personal or party interests. Our remittances are vital and should be recognized,” he stated.

Mr. Drammeh criticized President Barrow’s opposition to diaspora voting, attributing it to a fear of change. “We are aware of the ongoing issues in our country—corruption, mismanagement, and a failing health sector. This need addressing, but it’s clear the government and lawmakers are resisting change and lack the commitment to combat corruption,” he declared.

Ndey Fama Cham, based in Germany, expressed her outrage: “What crime have we committed to justify denying us our right to vote? The constitution guarantees this right. We are dedicated to building our nation, especially during these challenging times. Our contributions to the economy are significant, and during this Ramadan, many depend on our support,” she said.

Cham added, “Why can citizens of other nations vote, but we can’t? Is the government afraid of the outcomes of our votes? The truth will prevail.”

Foday Touray from the United States shared his frustration, stating, “I’m not surprised, as the majority in parliament represents the National People’s Party. These lawmakers are voting for their own interests, not the welfare of The Gambia.”

“The diaspora supports the Gambian people, and depriving us of our voting rights is an attempt to silence our voices. It’s time for Gambians to elect leaders who truly care about the country. President Barrow must remember the role the diaspora played in his rise to power. After all we’ve contributed, his lawmakers have betrayed us,” he concluded passionately.
