CGI Dismisses Cement Crisis Rumors as False

By: Fatou Krubally

The Confederation of Gambian Industries (CGI) has strongly refuted social media claims suggesting a nationwide cement shortage, calling the allegations misleading and unfounded.

In recent days, rumours have circulated online, alleging that a single CGI member holds exclusive rights to cement production and supply in The Gambia and is currently unable to meet market demand due to port congestion. However, CGI has set the record straight, assuring the public that the cement supply chain remains diverse and that multiple suppliers and producers continue to operate in the country.

According to CGI, the ongoing prioritization of essential food imports at the Port of Banjul implemented to ensure food security during the Ramadan season has caused some temporary logistical delays. However, the industry body insists that this is a short-term challenge and should not be mistaken for a cement shortage.

“The decision to prioritize essential food commodities at the port was made in collaboration with the relevant authorities to safeguard the nation’s food supply. While this has affected logistics across several industries, including cement, our members remain committed to ensuring that cement reaches the market as quickly as possible,” CGI President Hon. Sir Farimang Saho stated.

CGI has urged the public to disregard false claims being spread on social media, warning that such misinformation only creates unnecessary panic and harms local businesses. The organization reassured stakeholders that it is actively working with logistics partners to restore normal operations and keep the market supplied.

“We appreciate the continued support of our partners and consumers. CGI remains dedicated to transparency and will provide updates as we work to resolve this temporary situation,” the statement concluded.

Despite the logistical hiccups, CGI maintains that there is no cement crisis, calling on consumers and businesses to remain calm as normal supply resumes.
