Training on R Studio for Fisheries Staff kick off

The Department of Fisheries has commence a ten day R Studio training for its senior and middle management staff in Banjul on Monday 3 March 2025. R Studio is a powerful and versatile software platform widely used in fisheries research and data analysis.

According to officials, the main objectives of the training is to enhance the capacity of Department of Fisheries personnel in using R Studio for analyzing fisheries data, introduce participants to data-limited stock assessment models suitable for Gambian fisheries, provide hands-on training on using R Studio for data analysis and stock assessment among other things.

The training will be delivered through a combination of theoretical lectures, practical exercises, and group discussions. It will be facilitated by experienced fisheries scientists and data analysts with expertise in R Studio and stock assessment supported by local Experts on R Statistics from the Gambia Bureau of Statistics.

The Department of Fisheries is committed to the sustainable management and development of the Gambian fisheries sector. This sector plays a vital role in food security, employment, and export earnings. To effectively manage fisheries resources, reliable data and robust analytical methods are essential. R Studio is a powerful and versatile software platform widely used in fisheries research and data analysis. This training program aims to equip mid-level and senior officials from various units within the Department of Fisheries with the skills and knowledge to utilize R Studio for analyzing fisheries data, specifically focusing on stock assessment using data-limited models.

This training program is funded by the European Union Sector Support Program, under the Strategic Target “Development of Scientific Capacity” and Activity “Develop the capacities of personnel of the fisheries department through specialized training programs on fisheries-related fields of study.”
