The General Transport Union (GTU) has given assurance to commuters that it will ensure a fair transparent and well-coordinated transport sector.

The GTU gave the assurance at its national executive committee meeting on Thursday, March 12, 2025, at the GTU head office in Banjul.

The meeting witnessed the successful completion of the national and regional congresses and it provided a platform for the adoption of resolutions for implementation.

The President of GTU, Omar Ceesay, said the national and regional congresses produced vital resolutions aimed at improving the transport sector, noting that the national executive committee “is now working” on structured implementation strategies to ensure that the adopted resolutions bring positive change in the industry.

The GTU president stated that major national events such as Eid al-Fitr (Koriteh) and others that are approaching will be given special consideration to ensure the safety and efficiency of transport services before, during, and after these events.

“Special operational plans have been put in place for all major garages to facilitate smooth travel for commuters, minimize congestion, and enhance overall transport coordination.  GTU officials will be present and actively monitoring garages and transport hubs to ensure that passengers reach their destinations safely and efficiently,” he pointed out.

He added that the discussions were held on critical challenges currently affecting transport operators and passengers, with a focus on solutions that promote safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation across the country.

“The General Transport Union remains steadfast in its commitment to improving the transport industry for the benefit of all Gambians and residents. We urge all stakeholders to cooperate as we work towards achieving a more organized, safe, and efficient road transport system,” he pointed out.
