Two animal breeders were arrested in the North Bank Region (NBR) for their “involvement” in transnational livestock theft.

The suspects were caught at a local market as they attempted to sell five stolen small ruminants for D11,000.

Speaking in a recent meeting with top regional  security officials, livestock owners and dealers about animal welfare and security, the Governor of NBR, Lamin Saidykhan, emphasized that theft and criminal activities have no place in a civilized society. He also underscored the strong relationship between The Gambia and Senegal, highlighting ongoing efforts to promote peace, security, and economic cooperation between the two nations.

Governor Saidykhan urged Senegalese animal breeders to refrain from engaging in illegal activities that violate Gambian laws. He also cautioned breeders against indiscriminate cutting of tree branches, warning that anyone caught engaging in such activities would face legal consequences.

The Governor confirmed that the arrested suspects have been detained at a police station and revealed that a third suspect was arrested in Senegal.

Chief Alagie Jagne of Central Badibou reiterated that district authorities and the tribunal maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards theft and other criminal activities. He praised animal dealers and the Gambia National Army in Kerr Pateh Koreh for their commitment to protecting lives and property.

Captain Abdoulie Sanyang, the officer-in-charge of the Kerr Pateh Army Post assured the public of his unit’s dedication to protecting lives and property. He confirmed that all the stolen animals had been recovered and that the suspects were awaiting prosecution.

The Deputy Governor of NBR, Dembo Samateh, highlighted the significance of joint security patrols between The Gambia and Senegal, stating that such collaborations deter criminal activities and enhance security. He emphasized that peace and security are crucial and urged communities and individuals to share timely information with security forces.
