Karamo Njie, the United Democratic Party (UDP) Public Relations Officer for the North Bank Region, has criticized the Special Adviser to the President, Momodou Sabally, for focusing his political rhetoric on personal attacks rather than fulfilling the duties assigned to him in his role.
Earlier this week, Sabally criticized UDP member Lare Sisay, who had claimed in an interview that President Adama Barrow was planning to rig the 2026 presidential election and declare a state of emergency in order to remain in power beyond the election. Sisay also asserted that Gambians would vote out Barrow in 2026.
Sabally dismissed Sisay’s assertions, accusing him of “acting out of an unrestrained desire for worldly gains and fame”.
Sabally also argued that the President’s party has more supporters than all opposition parties combined, making it likely that Barrow would win the 2026 election.
The UDP’s regional spokesman Njie, however, hit back at Sabally, stating that the special presidential adviser’s comments were nothing more than personal attacks on party members, which UDP could not tolerate. He urged Sabally to focus on the responsibilities of his position rather than uttering divisive remarks.
Njie pointed out that Sabally was one of the fiercest critics of President Barrow when he was in the opposition, even claiming that Barrow could not win the 2026 election. Njie stressed that these comments from Sabally were well-documented.
“Momodou Sabally criticized the President and directed all sorts of derogatory remarks at Barrow, calling him derogatory names. He also criticized prominent figures such as Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, Hon. Bakary Badjie, Hon. Seedy Keita as Finance Minister, the Central Bank Governor, and even the Inspector General of Police. Lare Sisay, however, has never engaged in such personal attacks,” Njie said in an interview with The Voice.
Njie also criticized Sabally for using verses from the Holy Quran to describe people’s attitudes, suggesting that those verses actually reflect Sabally’s own behaviour.
“If anyone should be seeking forgiveness, it is Momodou Sabally for the things he has said against the government he now works with,” Njie added.
Njie advised Sabally to reveal the secrets that the UDP is aware of, suggesting that Sabally’s past actions were well-known within political circles, noting that the National People’s Party (NPP) members do not fully accept Sabally within their ranks and urged him to refrain from targeting senior UDP members.
