Regional authorities in the North Bank Region in collaboration with security chiefs, are intensifying efforts to tackle criminal activities and armed attacks on businesses. A high-level security meeting was recently convened to strategize on crime prevention and reinforce safety measures in the region.

The meeting, organized by the Governor’s Office in consultation with security forces, was held at the 2nd Infantry Battalion Barracks in Farafenni, North Bank Region.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the business community, transport operators, financial institutions, and local leaders, to discuss security challenges such as armed robberies, thefts, hit-and-run incidents, and the misuse of commercial motorcycles as a means of escape for criminals.

Presiding over the meeting, Governor Lamin Saidykhan commended the leadership of Lt. Colonel Ebrima Krubally, Commanding Officer of the 2nd Infantry Battalion, for spearheading a security review involving local authorities, security forces, and the private sector. He emphasized that the government remains committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property, calling for collective participation in crime prevention.

Lt. Col. Krubally reaffirmed the Gambia National Army’s dedication to joint security patrols to eliminate criminal activities in the region. He recalled past armed attacks, including the assault on GNPC, and assured that such threats would not be tolerated. He, therefore, urged the community to support security efforts by providing timely intelligence.

Regional Police Commissioner Juldeh Camara reiterated the Gambia Police Force’s commitment to maintaining peace and security. He described the meeting as a milestone in strengthening the region’s security response through collaborative strategies. He also highlighted the importance of joint patrols with the army to dismantle criminal networks and eliminate their hideouts.

In addition, Gambia Immigration Commissioner Mustapha Senghore called on local leaders (Alkalolu) to register transhumance livestock breeders entering the region. He emphasized the need for strict animal health screenings and vaccinations to prevent disease transmission.

Chief Mustapha Dibba of Upper Badibou expressed the full support of district authorities in empowering communities to take an active role in security measures. Representatives of the business and transport sectors, Sheriffo Sankareh and Modou Cham, praised the security forces for their commitment to protecting lives and property. They pledged to strengthen community policing and improve communication with law enforcement agencies.

To enhance security enforcement, a joint task force will be established, comprising livestock officers, public health officials, community representatives, and security personnel. The task force will oversee:  the registration and monitoring of transhumance livestock breeders, health screening of animals to prevent disease outbreaks, documentation of animal movement, including entry and exit times, and strengthening communication between community leaders and immigration officials.

With these new security measures in place, authorities in the North Bank Region are determined to curb crime, protect businesses, and ensure the safety of residents.
