Ansumana Camara, Yusupha Camara, and Lamin Demba appeared yesterday before Magistrate Mben Faal of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court to address charges of obstructing police officers.
Inspector E.M. Jallow represented the Inspector General of Police (IGP) while the defendants opted to represent themselves. The prosecution brought charges against them for allegedly assaulting a police officer in accordance with Section 230(b) of the Criminal Code, Cap 10.01, Volume III, Revised Laws of The Gambia 2009.
The case centers on an incident that occurred on March 21, 2025, at Serekunda City Pub in the Kanifing Municipal Council, where it is alleged that Ansumana Camara, Yusupha Camara, and Lamin Demba obstructed and assaulted Sergeant 4928 Foday Baldeh and Corporal 7306 Alieu Bah while they were performing their duties. The accused have maintained their innocence.
Inspector E.M. Jallow requested an adjournment to secure important witness testimony, identified as PW1. In a constructive move, Magistrate Mben Faal granted bail for the defendants, setting it at D50,000.00 each, and stipulating that each must provide a Gambian surety who will deposit a valid national identity card or passport and swear an affidavit of means.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for Tuesday, April 29, 2025, when the prosecution will present its witness.
