As She Tried to Save Girl from Being Raped

A 60-year-old woman was allegedly killed in Old Yundum as she reportedly intervened to save a minor from being sexually assaulted.
The Gambia Police Force has since opened an investigation into the matter and preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Kemo Manneh, attempted to assault a 12-year-old girl but when the victim intervened to protect the minor, the suspect violently attacked her.
Authorities confirmed that the victim sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where she was admitted. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on Monday, March 31, 2025.
Meanwhile, the minor was also taken to the hospital for a medical examination, which confirmed that there was no penetration.
Police have arrested the suspect, who remains in custody, as investigations continue.
“The Gambia Police Force reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to justice and will provide further updates as the case develops,” the police said in a statement.
The incident has sparked concern in the community, with calls for enhanced measures to protect vulnerable individuals from such attacks. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement.
