Man Remanded for Pretentiously ‘Obtaining’ $170,000 USD on Behalf of Orphans, Others

A certain Alagie Dicko appeared before Principal Magistrate Krubally of the Banjul Magistrates’ Court on charges of obtaining money by false presence.

According to the particular of the alleged offence, Alagie Dicko, between 2021 and 2024, at Banjul and diverse places in the Republic of The Gambia, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, obtained from one Ousainey Mahanera $170,000 USD under the pretext that he going to use it to help Arabic schools, orphans, construct gardens and drill boreholes for communities.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

ASP Sarr, prosecuting informed the court that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is still conducting its investigation and that the prosecution was not in possession of the facts.

“My lord, the accused spent almost a week in custody, compelling us to bring him before the court to uphold his rights. We will endeavour to present the facts at the next adjourned date,” ASP Sarr stated.

In response, Principal Magistrate Krubally said since the accused had already pleaded guilty to the charge against him with the facts pending and in consideration of the adjournment sought by the prosecution, , and prosecution sought for the court to adjourn to present the facts, he would adjourn the matter and order the remand of the accused until 7th April for the prosecution to present the facts and for the court to proceed with further legal action.
