Dozens of Gambian teachers, tech professionals, and education policymakers gathered over the weekend at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center to explore the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom.
The conference, organized by Africa Mission Global (AMG) in partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, aimed to demystify AI for educators and equip them with basic tools to integrate it into their teaching methods. The event was part of AMG’s broader effort to promote tech-driven education across West Africa.
“This is about giving our teachers the tools and understanding they need,” said Mrs. Adepeju Dara, AMG’s National Coordinator for The Gambia. “We want to clear up the misconceptions around AI, explain its uses, and also talk about the ethics. What does it mean for teaching and learning? That’s what today is about.”
The forum, held on Saturday April 5, comes amid growing global interest in using AI to enhance efficiency in education both for teachers and students. Facilitators from AMG’s regional and international branches led the sessions, including Dr. Fola Ojuola from the United States and Dr. Sesan Akinnawo, AMG’s West Coast Coordinator. Mrs. Olukemi Akinnawo also took part in organizing support and logistics.
Representing the Vice President, Public Service Minister Baboucarr Bouy applauded the initiative, noting that AI can play a critical role in transforming the education system. “We are in an age where technology must become part of our learning culture,” he said. “Our educators need to be equipped, not only with chalk and blackboards, but with the knowledge of how technology can support their work.”
Throughout the day, teachers were introduced to the fundamentals of AI how it works, what it can do, and how it might be applied in local classroom settings. Participants shared ideas and asked questions, ranging from the risks of over-reliance on machines to the ethics of AI in youth education.
The event wrapped up with a commitment from both AMG and the Ministry to continue the partnership and support further training sessions for educators across the country.
