In a remarkable show of international collaboration, TANGO (The Association of NGOs) marked World Health Day with a special consultation and outreach program, hosting a delegation of Swedish medical doctors from Kungälv Hospital on Monday, April 7.
The event, held at TANGO’s office in Kanifing, brought together health professionals, civil society members, and the general public for a day of learning, screening, and community support under the global theme: “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.”
Seven Swedish doctors led detailed sessions on diabetes, gastric issues, hypertension, and eye-related conditions some of the most pressing non-communicable diseases in The Gambia. The doctors conducted free medical checkups and provided health talks focused on prevention, early detection, and lifestyle changes.
“This is more than just a health screening. It’s an exchange of knowledge that strengthens both sides,” said one of the visiting doctors, as local medical practitioners and community members engaged in robust discussions on healthcare challenges.
The initiative aimed to not only improve awareness but also empower local communities to take charge of their health. Participants, including school children, received vital information on maintaining healthy habits, while others underwent blood pressure and glucose checks.
Ndey Sireng Bakurin, Executive Director of TANGO, described the event as “a meaningful way to celebrate World Health Day,” emphasizing that raising awareness of non-communicable diseases is essential for national well-being.
