As Gambians mark the ninth anniversary of Solo Sandeng’s death, United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Secretary General, H.E. ANM Ousainu Darboe, has issued a powerful call for justice, accountability, and urgent action from the government in honour of the slain activist and other victims of the Jammeh regime.
In a solemn statement released on the occasion of Solo Sandeng Day, Darboe paid tribute to the late political activist, describing him as “a true patriot who stood firm in the face of tyranny.” He condemned Sandeng’s brutal murder on April 14th, 2016, following a peaceful protest calling for electoral reform, and stressed that his death remains a “stark reminder of the brutality of dictatorship.”
“Solo Sandeng’s unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights continues to inspire us all,” Darboe said. “His sacrifice, and those of many others who suffered under Yahya Jammeh’s regime, must never be forgotten.”
The UDP leader used the opportunity to call on the government of President Adama Barrow to fully implement the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC). He specifically urged the state to expedite reparations for victims, prosecute identified perpetrators, and preserve the legacy of fallen patriots through national memorials and education.
“The victims of Jammeh’s regime, including the families of Solo Sandeng, Ebrima Solo Krummah, and countless others, deserve justice, reparations, and closure,” Darboe stated, warning that delays in implementation only prolong suffering and hinder national healing.
He reaffirmed the UDP’s solidarity with all victims and vowed that the party would never abandon the fight for justice. “Your pain is our pain. Your fight for justice is our fight.”
As Gambians gathered across the country in remembrance, Darboe called on all citizens to honour Solo Sandeng’s legacy by upholding democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
“Rest in peace, Solo Sandeng. Your courage lives on.”
