The Deputy Commissioner of the KMC Police, Sainey Sanyang, has summoned the officers involved in the arrest of a lady, who was caught in the “act of stealing”.

Commissioner Sanyang said the officers will this morning report to his office for a disciplinary hearing, regarding their conduct during the arrest.

According to him, his office received a report on 24 March 2025, from the municipal police posted at the Serekunda market about the apprehension of one Kumba Secka in the act of stealing at the country’s largest open-air market.

According to Commissioner Sanyang, Kumba was caught at around 3:40pm and then taken to the municipal police office at Serekunda.

“Upon arrival, she was searched by the officers on duty. After the search, they recovered the sum of D62,500.00 cash, plus cosmetics and goods like shoes, bags, clothes, and some kilos of meat in her possession. The lady was then escorted by the municipal police officers to Serekunda police station for further investigation,” stated a press release from the municipal police.

“Today, this morning, being the 21st day of April 2025, after one month of the said event, I saw a post of a video on social media circulating with regards to the same incident. After watching the video, I was disappointed in the manner in which the case was handled by my officers. The conduct of the officers involved was unethical, unprofessional, and excessive with limited regard to the fundamental human rights of Ms Secka,” lamented Commissioner Sanyang.

“I have, therefore, instructed the officers involved to report to my office tomorrow morning, wherein a disciplinary hearing will be conducted and the matter will thereafter be referred to the appointments and establishment committee of the council for action.”

DCP Sainey Sanyang said.
