The National Assembly has ratified a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and service passports between the Government of The Gambia and the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Gambians Abroad, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, moved the motion for ratification yesterday, emphasizing its critical importance.

Minister Tangara asserted that this MoU “is a pivotal diplomatic agreement” aimed at streamlining travel between the two nations for individuals with diplomatic or service passports.

“This memorandum unequivocally allows holders from either country to enter, exit, transit, and stay within the other’s territory without the need for a visa. It solidifies diplomatic relations and significantly enhances cooperation between The Gambia and the United Arab Emirates,” he declared.

He underscored that it is imperative for the National Assembly to review and ratify the MoU to ensure its alignment with national laws and interests.

“This marks a substantial advancement in strengthening the diplomatic and bilateral ties between our nations by eliminating visa requirements for diplomatic and service passport holders,” he emphasized.

Minister Tangara said the agreement will not only facilitate smoother diplomatic exchanges but will also drive cooperation in critical sectors such as trade, culture, and education, adding that it will efficiently streamline diplomatic visits and interactions between officials of both countries.

“Eliminating travel barriers for diplomatic personnel is essential for fostering effective exchanges of ideas, expertise, and resources between The Gambia and the United Arab Emirates,” he explained.

He highlighted that exempting diplomatic and service passport holders from visa requirements will actively promote business and investment activities between The Gambia and the UAE.

“This initiative will create substantial trade and investment opportunities, propelling economic growth and development in both nations,” Dr. Tangara told lawmakers.

He also told the House that the MOU will significantly enhance cultural exchanges by facilitating easier travel for diplomats, technicians, and other public figures between The Gambia and the UAE.

“This will lead to a deeper mutual understanding, greater appreciation of cultural diversity, and robust collaboration on cultural initiatives,” he asserted.

He assured lawmakers that both governments are “unequivocally committed” to demonstrating mutual respect, goodwill, and friendship through this strategic agreement.

In conclusion, Minister Tangara reaffirmed that this agreement stands as a robust symbol of cooperation and solidarity between The Gambia and the UAE, reinforcing their unwavering commitment to positive diplomatic relations.

Meanwhile, Tangara said the MoU will effectively streamline administrative processes, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and encourage more frequent exchanges at the diplomatic level, ultimately delivering significant benefits to both countries.
