President Adama Barrow on Friday officially inaugurated the National Muslim Elders Advisory Council (NMEAC) at the State House in Banjul, pledging government support for the council’s peacebuilding and outreach efforts.

According to the Office of the President, the visit formed part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the government and religious institutions. The initiative is aimed at reinforcing national unity and encouraging collaboration on issues of peace and development.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Barrow expressed appreciation to members of the council for their willingness to work alongside the state. “I extend profound gratitude to the council members for their commitment to working closely with my government in promoting peace and unity across the country,” Barrow said.

The president also announced plans to provide logistical support to the council, including the donation of a vehicle to facilitate its operations.

Imam Lamin Touray, President of the NMEAC, who spoke on behalf of the council, thanked the president for the engagement. “We thank you, Mr. President, for being the most peaceful and harmonious president who is always putting The Gambia first,” Touray said. He affirmed the council’s readiness to support the government in maintaining stability.

The National Muslim Elders Advisory Council was established in September 2023 as a religious advisory body to the government. It comprises 17 executive members and 87 regional committee representatives.

According to the council, its primary objective is to collaborate with national religious bodies, including the Supreme Islamic Council and religious advisors to the presidency, in order to promote social cohesion and provide guidance on matters of national importance.

The government stated that it views the council as a vital institution in its broader efforts to maintain peace and foster unity among Gambians.
