Police in Bakau have arrested a Nigerian national in connection with a significant counterfeit currency bust, recovering large sums of suspected fake foreign money from his residence.

According to a statement issued by The Gambia Police Force (GPF) on Wednesday, the suspect, identified as Alpha Jallow (also known by a Muslim name), was apprehended following a tip-off. The GPF said officers from the Bakau Police Station executed a search at his residence, where they discovered counterfeited $23,100 and 57.5 million CFA francs.

According to the statement, the police confirmed that the recovered currencies have been secured for forensic analysis as investigations continue into the origins of the fake money and any potential criminal network linked to the suspect.

According to the police, Jallow has since been charged and remains in police custody, pending further investigation.

The GPF praised the cooperation of the public, particularly the business community, in helping to expose the operation. They urged continued vigilance and encouraged citizens to report suspicious transactions to help prevent the circulation of counterfeited currency in the country.

“The public is strongly encouraged to promptly report any suspicious transactions or suspected counterfeit dealings, as early intervention is key to disrupting financial crimes and safeguarding the national economy,” the statement read.
