Telecom operator Comium Gambia says it has suspended all tower erection activities across the country following what it described as a serious incident at one of its GSM tower sites in Foni, where a team member was injured in a structural collapse.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Comium said the injured worker was immediately rushed for emergency treatment and remains under close medical care.
“At this moment, his health and full recovery are our absolute top priority,” the telecom services provider assured.
While the company acknowledged that such incidents are rare, it said accidents can occur in high-risk technical environments, adding that a full internal investigation has been launched, and as a precaution, all similar operations have been halted pending a safety review.
Comium’s statement comes amid public debate online regarding the circumstances of the collapse. The company said it is taking all allegations seriously, including those made anonymously on social media, but firmly rejected any claim that safety protocols were deliberately neglected.
“We reject any suggestion that employee safety has been compromised intentionally,” the company stated. “Respect for our team and our communities remains core to who we are.”
Comium said in addition to the internal probe, it is cooperating with NAWEC and other relevant authorities to assess and support the restoration of any affected infrastructure, including power lines near the tower site.
The company appealed for public and media patience while investigations continue.
“Our focus, for now, is the well-being of our colleague and ensuring such incidents are never repeated,” the statement concluded.
